National Immunization Awareness Month: Are Your Pet’s Vaccines Up to Date?

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a great opportunity to ensure your pet is

protected. At Animal Medical Center in Menomonee Falls, we’re using this time to highlight the

importance of vaccines in keeping your pets—and your family—safe and healthy.

Whether you’re raising a playful new puppy, caring for a senior cat, or have a dog that enjoys the

great outdoors, vaccines play a critical role in preventing illness.

Why Pet Vaccines Are Important

Vaccinations help prepare your pet’s immune system to fight off dangerous diseases. Many of

these conditions are still common in Wisconsin and can have serious or even fatal consequences

without proper protection.

Vaccines not only protect your pet but also help prevent the spread of diseases to other animals

and humans.

Core Vaccines for Dogs and Cats

For Dogs:

Rabies (required by law in Wisconsin)

Distemper

Parvovirus

Adenovirus

Leptospirosis (important in areas with wildlife and standing water)

For Cats:

Rabies

Feline Distemper (Panleukopenia)

Calicivirus

Feline Herpesvirus

Depending on your pet’s lifestyle and health history, additional vaccines like Bordetella (kennel

cough) or Lyme disease may be recommended.

What Risks Exist in Our Local Area?Southeastern Wisconsin is home to many environmental factors that increase your pet’s exposure

to disease. These include:

Wildlife that can carry rabies or leptospirosis

Ticks that transmit Lyme disease

Mosquitoes that can spread heartworm (preventable with monthly medication, not a

vaccine, but still part of preventive care)

Even indoor pets can be at risk if they escape or are exposed to other animals. Regular

vaccinations are the best defense.

How Often Does My Pet Need Vaccines?

Not all vaccines are administered annually. Some may be effective for three years, while

others—especially for active pets—may need to be boosted more frequently.

When your pet visits Animal Medical Center, we’ll build a personalized vaccine schedule based

on:

• Age

• Breed

• Lifestyle (indoor vs. outdoor)

• Travel habits

• Medical history

Vaccines Protect More Than Just Your Pet

Some diseases, like rabies and leptospirosis, are zoonotic, meaning they can spread to humans.

Vaccinating your pet doesn’t just protect them—it helps protect your entire family and the

broader community.
