Microchipping 101 — Why Every Pet Needs One
Animal Medical Center | May 2026
May is Chip Your Pet Month and here at Animal Medical Center, it is one of our favorite topics to talk about. As veterinarians, one of the most heartbreaking situations we encounter is a lost pet with no way to identify them. The good news? There is a simple, affordable, and permanent solution — microchipping. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is a Microchip?
A microchip is a tiny device — about the size of a grain of rice — that is implanted just under your pet’s skin, typically between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique ID number that can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter using a universal scanner. That number is linked to your contact information in a national pet registry database.
No battery. No GPS. No maintenance. Ever.
Does It Hurt?
We hear this question all the time — and we completely understand the concern! The procedure is quick and similar to a routine vaccine injection. Most pets barely react at all. No anesthesia is required and it can be done during a regular wellness visit.
Why Can’t I Just Use a Collar & Tag?
Collars and tags are a great first line of identification — but they are not foolproof.
- Collars can break or fall off
- Tags can become worn and unreadable
- Tags can be removed
A microchip is permanent. It stays with your pet for life and cannot be lost, removed, or damaged.
The Most Important Step Owners Miss
Here is something we want every pet owner to know — getting your pet microchipped is only half the job!
The microchip only works if your contact information is registered and up to date in the database. If you move, change your phone number, or rehome a pet — update your registry!
Not sure if your pet’s chip is registered? Call us and we can help you check!
Who Should Get Their Pet Microchipped?
Every pet. Period.
- Dogs & cats
- Indoor only pets — yes, really!
- Puppies & kittens as young as 8 weeks
- Senior pets
- Rescue & adopted pets
Even if your pet never leaves the house, accidents happen. Doors get left open. Natural disasters force evacuations. A microchip is your pet’s best chance of making it back home.
